Beginning in May 201 3 I joined the crew of the Liberty Clipper. For two weeks I worked as a deckhand to sail the ship from Nassau, Bahamas to Boston, Massachusetts.
After arriving in Boston and working through an intense maintenance week I began my work for the season. For the remainder of the summer I worked as the Bed and Breakfast Coordinator for the Liberty Fleet of Tall Ships. By duties were what made up the majority of the day, but that included endless moments of excitement and eagerness for future projects and travel.
January 2013 - Leadership at Sea - Drake University - Nassau, Bahamas
In January of 2013 Katherine embarked on a leadership and followership immersive journey that began in Des Moines, Iowa and built to a week aboard the Liberty Clipper in Nassau, Bahamas.
For one week the course took place in Des Moines, Iowa where continued leadership models were explored, course members interacted and eventually assembled into Watch groups, and a Living-Learning agreement was developed.
For two weeks students explored Nassau, first for a week in the city with visits to the College of the Bahamas, with the US Embassy, the Norwegian Epic , and various other locations within walking distance. For the second week the learning laboratory became a class tall ship, the Liberty Clipper, where students became the followers while learning an entire new language and skill set.
Summer 2012 - Isle Royale National Park - First Solo Hike
First solo hike! LLBeans Gear Giveaway made it possible for Katherine to embark on her first solo-hike. The ultra light tent and new boots were the perfect motivation to take the winding trek, challenge herself, and meet new people along the way. Not much can beat freshly made JetBoil dinners, wolf and moose prints in trails, and pitching a tent in a new place every night.
Summer 2012 - Keweenaw National Historical Park - Park Ranger
For the entirety of Summer 2012 Katherine lived in a 30 foot travel trailer with her cat, and communted to work 20 minutes away at Keweenaw National Historical Park in Calumet, Michigan. This Upper Michigan (the U.P.) haven embraced Kath as she worked for the then 20 year old park and 1 year old visitors center to educate locals as well as visitors about the historic cooper mining industry of the area. Flat Hat and all this journey pushed Kath to reach new heights and continue to push dreams of connecting people to the land they live, learn, and explore on.
